Tools Measuring Success Healthcare

Many measurement tools look at the “burn out factor” and reasons for “Compassion Fatigue” in healthcare. Compassion fatigue and burn out in health care are very real, effecting our healthcare system.

Compassion fatigue may be caused by disillusionment in your career path. We will define and explore the topic of disillusionment in future articles.

Remember why you choose a healthcare career? Reflect on the interest and passion for your career choice in healthcare. What was the reason for choosing it? What did you think you career would be like?
What did you think your focus and growth in your career would be like?
How is it different today?

How is it Better? (I am sure you already know how it is worse! The focus is on the positive.)

What did you feel when speaking to others about your initial career choices and what you felt at the time you put on your first uniform or lab jacket? Allow yourself to feel the passion toward the subject of your career you once felt.

A. Career Success Measurement Tool;

Your definition of success is where you derive the most job satisfaction. Define what successful means to you, how you define success is the key. Has your definition of success changed?

List the success in your career and the positive life changing events that occured because of decisions you made at work. ( If you wish to list the negative ones, sure go ahead, then release yourself for being human and let it go.) List the career learning curve you conquered. List all of it! Think!Think! Wow! You learned ALL of that in your first year of nursing?!?

List the changes have you adapted to in the workplace. List and write about the following; Did you save a life, catch a medical error, relieve someone's pain? Send me your stories! I would love to hear them!

What certifications have you earned? What degrees have you earned? How many CEU's have you earned in the last few years? Congratulate yourself for your hard work.
Post your list where you can review it before you go to work everyday, like the bathroom mirror.

These tools will give you an anchor in your career. Refer back to these tools often and continue to refresh your purpose and resolve to say in the career path you chose. These tools create a positive foundation to support you and carry with you to remind you of the wonderful career choice you made in healthcare.
